Project Brief.

LUMA Southern Light Festival is a hugely successful annual event held in the Queenstown Gardens, showcasing light and art installations as well as entertainment pieces and hospitality areas.

The team at Silk have been involved for over five years and for 2021 were tasked with theming the LUMA Lounge and transforming it into an enchanted forest, while keeping sustainble design at the forefront.

Project Success.

The Silk team delivered localised site survey plans, 3D visuals, fabrication of lightboxes, install crew and onsite management for this event.

As well as producing the site plans for the space, our team got 'hands-on' creative with the natural elements found in the area. With LUMA's high focus on sustainable art, many of the elements we create were made from materials that were found right there in situ! Including...

• Bean bags - Reclaimed wool sacks filled with soft pine cones (comfier than you're imagining!)

• Mushroom stools - Recycled clothing and fabric from a local upcycle centre to provide stuffing for mushroom seating. These were created by using old cable spools as the seat base.

• Entrance Archway - Pine, twigs (lots of twigs!) and leaves collected from the forest floor to dress a full entrance archway.

• Spatial dressing - More twigs to create wee little spots of interest, interlinkng trees and acting as natural screens for back of house areas.

We also crafted internally lit 3D LED lightboxes to show punters what was on offer from the food and beverage providers, these were rigged in the trees and suspended over the food stalls.

Silk Design is working on LUMIFY, a smaller scale pilot project in the downtown precint of Queenstown for the 2022 event - 6-9th June!
